Bob Gaudio, the celebrated Hall of Fame songwriter and founding member of The 4 Seasons, has made his mark as the mastermind behind the iconic musical "Jersey Boys." However, his latest project hits much closer to home, as he teams up with his daughter Danielle Gaudio to produce a children's album featuring special instrumental arrangements of The 4 Seasons' songs. With their joint effort titled "Jersey Babys: The Music of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons for Kids," the Gaudios aim to delight fans and introduce a new generation to the timeless melodies of The 4 Seasons.
Inspired by her father's extraordinary musical legacy, Danielle Gaudio, as the Executive Producer of "Jersey Babys," recognized the potential for her father's music to resonate with a younger audience. Danielle's journey as a mother played a significant role in this realization, as she explains, "When my older boy was a baby, I heard a Beatles 'lullaby' album at a friend's house. Babies seemed to like it, and I loved hearing the familiar tunes in new soothing arrangements. I bought the CD and began giving it to my friends who were having babies. Eventually, I thought, 'Why should our babies have only the Beatles? Why not the 4 Seasons too?' That's how I became Executive Producer of Jersey Babys."
Bob initially hesitated to embark on this new venture, questioning Danielle's ability to produce records and expressing little excitement about targeting the "kids market." Engrossed in his commitments to Jersey Boys and a new Frankie Valli album, Bob found it challenging to allocate time for the project. However, Danielle's unwavering determination ultimately convinced him to embrace the idea. Alongside Frankie Valli's musical director, Robby Robinson, Bob commenced the creation of new instrumental arrangements of The 4 Seasons' hits, tailored specifically for children. Robinson's magical keyboards breathed life into the songs, imitating a myriad of instruments from harps to kazoos and penny whistles. The outcome was a fresh and enchanting adaptation of Bob's music. When executives at Rhino Records, The 4 Seasons' current record company, heard the master, they quickly recognized its potential and decided to release the album.
Every aspect of the project bore the mark of the Gaudio family's dedication. Danielle took charge of writing the liner notes, while her brother Shannon contributed as the art director. From start to finish, Jersey Babys was a testament to the unity and shared vision of the Gaudio family. In fact, Bob's heartfelt quote, "Sometimes you just have to listen to your kids," was prominently displayed in the CD insert, emphasizing the significance of familial collaboration.
Beyond the musical project, Danielle had another desire for her father—to see him receive his high school diploma. At the age of 15, Bob faced a life-changing decision when his musical career began to flourish. Dropping out of high school seemed necessary to pursue his dream, but it wasn't without opposition from his parents. However, Bob found an unlikely ally in his high school principal, who recognized the exceptional opportunity before him. Joining The 4 Seasons and crafting a string of hits that propelled the group into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bob made the most of his chance.
This year, Danielle seized the opportunity to commemorate her father's unfinished business. She arranged for Bergenfield High to hold Bob Gaudio Day, with the day's theme for students being "Dream Big." In a touching ceremony, Bob, donning a full graduation gown, sat among his entire family in the audience. A video highlighting his illustrious career played, while the high school orchestra performed a medley of his music. Bob, a man of many talents, took the stage to conduct the orchestra briefly. Finally, his children proudly presented him with an honorary high school diploma. Frankie Valli expressed his excitement for Bob's achievement, humorously suggesting that they should now start considering college.
The heartwarming collaboration between Bob Gaudio and his daughter Danielle Gaudio has beautifully showcased the power of dreams and the strength of family bonds. Their inspiring journey to bring The 4 Seasons' music to a new generation through the creation of "Jersey Babys" is a testament to their passion and creativity. As we embrace their story, let us be reminded of the significance of following our dreams and cherishing the meaningful connections that inspire us to make a lasting impact.
I have a confession to make. I did not conceive " Jersey Baby's ". That was the brainchild of my daughter Danielle. I did, however, help conceive her. Which gives her a lifetime all-access pass. And, as any father knows, it's always best to pay attention when she's excited about something. And Danielle was very excited about this project. So I dad what any dad would do - 'after some serious badgering', I said " go ahead, knock yourself out"
Next thing I know, Danielle brought my son Shannon in to design the package. And suddenly I realized that her pipe dream had turned into a family affair. Now, how's a father supposed to resist a family affair? They're what we live for right? That's when the idea of creating a musical playground we could all play in became irresistible.
I remember my own parents, when I was starting out in the music business. They wanted me to get a real job. But they knew how much I wanted to write music, and eventually they gave in. You can't fight real passion. And from that moment on they were my fiercest most devoted advocates. So know its my turn to do the same for my kids and be unconditionally supportive and to keep an open ear to their ideas and passions.
I am hardly a model father, or grandfather for that matter. But if any of my kids' kids ever brag's " hey, my grandpa wrote those songs " Well, hey, that's as good as it gets for me .......Bob Gaudio
PS: even control freaks like myself have to listen to their kids once in awhile
